Psoriasis is a chronic, non infectious, inflammatory skin disease. In Ayurveda, all skin disease is categorized under kushtha roga. The clinical features of psoriasis can be co-related with kitibha kushtha. The article is about my ayurvedic and panchakarma treatment for psoriasis.
In my ten years of experience I have encountered several cases of psoriasis that was healed by combination of herbal medicines and panchakarma therapy. I shall discuss here the case of a 29 years old man with chief complain of red patches on all over the body with itching and scaly skin. He was suffering from psoriasis for past 3 years. Underwent many allopathy treatment but didn’t get any relief. He then visited Aasha Ayurveda in my OPD for better management through the ayuvedic approach.
According to ayurveda psoriasis is caused due to vitiated vata and kapha dosha. Accordingly the choice of drugs is made. Following drugs were used for treatment of psoriasis- manjishtha, daruharidra, arogyavardhani vati, trikatu, hingwashtak choorna and maha gandhak rasayana.
PSORIASIS TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA
Ayurvedic medicines combined with panchakarma therapy speeds the recovery. Following therapy was administered on the patient and we treated psoriasis without any side effects.
Snehana with medicated oil is helpful in decreasing the dryness and scaling.
Swedana therapy opens the pores in the skin and eliminates the toxins through the skin.
Basti karma (medicated enema) with medicated liquid balances the vata dosha.
Virechana is important for the process of shodhan. The therapy is mainly used for expelling out the pitta dosha but is also administered for suppressing Vata and kapha dosha.
Raktamokshan or siravedhana is done to remove the impurblood. This therapy is done for rakta shodhana.
With herbal medicines, panchakarma therapy, diet and lifestyle modification the patient recovered smoothly from psoriasis. The scaly skin and red patched all over the body disappeared.
Thus we see that the ayurvedic of psoriasis is limited in modern science but is managed very well through the ancient system of medicine ‘Ayurveda’
